Agency & Conviction: The Moment You Choose Yourself

August 05, 2026

"Your future health isn't determined by one perfect decision. It's shaped by the small moments when you choose to show up for yourself—again and again."

As a nutritionist, I've had the privilege of walking alongside hundreds of people on their wellness journey. One thing I've learned is that very few people truly lack knowledge.

Most people know they should move more.
They know vegetables are healthier than processed foods.
They know sleep matters.
They know stress affects the body.

Knowledge isn't usually the obstacle.

The harder question is this:

What keeps us from acting on what we already know?

Sometimes it's fear.

Sometimes it's overwhelm.

Sometimes it's years of putting everyone else's needs ahead of our own.

And sometimes, we've simply stopped believing we're worth the effort.

I don't say this with judgment. I say it with compassion because I've watched it happen to some of the kindest, most selfless people I've ever met.

People who would drop everything to help a friend.

People who would sacrifice sleep, time, money, and energy for their family.

People who would never let someone they love suffer....yet quietly allow themselves to continue suffering.

The Power of Agency

Agency is the understanding that while we cannot control everything that happens to us, we do have the ability to influence what happens next. It's recognizing that every choice—no matter how small—moves us toward health or away from it. Agency isn't perfection.

It's participation.

It's deciding that your story isn't finished.

It's believing that today's choices matter.

Conviction Is Different Than Motivation

Many people wait until they feel motivated. But motivation comes and goes.

Conviction stays.

Conviction says,

"This matters too much to keep postponing."

It shows up on the days you're tired.

It chooses the healthier meal when no one is watching.

It goes for the walk when excuses seem easier.

It schedules the appointment you've been avoiding.

It asks for help.

It begins before you're completely ready.

A Few Questions Worth Sitting With

Rather than telling you what you should do, I'd like to invite you to reflect. There are no right or wrong answers.

Only honest ones.

  • Am I waiting for the "perfect time" to take care of myself?

  • What decision have I been postponing because I'm afraid of what I might discover?

  • Have I convinced myself that caring for my health is somehow selfish?

  • Am I pouring so much into everyone else that there's nothing left for me?

  • When was the last time I truly felt energetic, vibrant, and well?

  • If nothing changes, where might my health be one year from today? Five years?

  • What story have I been telling myself that keeps me from beginning?

  • Do I believe my body is capable of healing, or have I quietly given up hope?

  • What would change in my life if I believed I was worth investing in?

  • If someone I loved were living exactly as I am today, what advice would I give them?

Sometimes the answers we need are already within us.

We simply haven't slowed down long enough to hear them.

Showing Up Isn't Selfish

Somewhere along the way, many people learned that taking care of themselves meant taking away from someone else. I don't believe that's true.

When you nourish yourself, you have more energy to give.

When your mind is clear, your patience grows.

When your body feels stronger, you can show up more fully for the people you love.

Your health doesn't only belong to you.

It touches your children.

Your spouse.

Your friends.

Your coworkers.

Your community.

Choosing wellness isn't an act of selfishness.

It's an act of stewardship.

Your Body Is Always Listening

Our bodies are extraordinary.

Every meal sends a message.

Every hour of sleep communicates something.

Every walk, every glass of water, every deep breath, every moment of stress, every choice either supports the body's remarkable ability to heal or places another burden upon it.

The body is listening.

Not to punish us.

But to respond to us.

And the beautiful thing is this:

It is listening today.

Not yesterday.

Not five years ago.

Today.

Which means today still matters.

One Small Decision

If you're reading this and wondering where to begin, don't focus on changing your entire life.

Simply ask yourself:

What is one decision I can make today that my future self will thank me for?

Drink another glass of water.

Take a walk after dinner.

Cook one nourishing meal.

Schedule the appointment.

Sign up for the program.

Ask the question.

Take the first step.

Small decisions, repeated consistently, become remarkable transformations.

A Final Thought

Wellness isn't about becoming someone new. It's about becoming more fully who you were always created to be.

Healthy.

Capable.

Resilient.

Alive.

You don't need permission to choose yourself.

You don't need to earn the right to feel well.

And you don't have to have it all figured out before you begin.

Sometimes the greatest act of courage isn't climbing a mountain.

It's quietly deciding...

"Today, I will show up for myself."

Because the life you've been hoping for often begins with a single choice—and the conviction to keep choosing it.
