Dementia and Fructose: What You Need to Know About Protecting Your Brain

Dementia and Fructose: What You Need to Know About Protecting Your Brain

August 20, 2025

This is a personal topic for me. My father developed the early signs of dementia, and walking that journey with him was heartbreaking. Watching the person you love lose memories and pieces of themselves is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

What I’ve learned is that dementia doesn’t just “suddenly happen” later in life. According to research, including work by neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter, changes in the brain can begin decades earlier – even as early as our 30s. And one surprising culprit behind this silent process is something most of us consume daily: fructose.

What is Fructose and Why Does It Matter?

Fructose is a type of sugar found naturally in fruit, but also in table sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and processed foods. While fruit in moderation is fine (because it’s paired with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants), the problem lies in the excess fructose hidden in packaged snacks, sweetened drinks, and even some “healthy” foods.

Dr. Perlmutter explains that too much fructose in the diet can disrupt energy production in the brain by damaging the mitochondria – the tiny “power plants” inside each cell. When the mitochondria in our brain cells don’t function properly, neurons (the cells that process and store information) lose their ability to communicate effectively. Over time, this can contribute to cognitive decline and dementia.

How Does This Happen?

Here’s a simple way to understand it:

  1. Mitochondria fuel your brain. They take in nutrients and create energy that allows neurons to work.

  2. Fructose overload creates stress. High levels of fructose increase inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in the brain.

  3. Energy supply drops. Damaged mitochondria can’t produce enough energy for brain cells, and they start to weaken and die.

  4. Cognitive function suffers. Over the years, this can lead to memory loss, slower thinking, and eventually dementia.

What’s even more alarming is that these changes can begin silently in your 30s or 40s – long before you notice any symptoms.

What I Learned from My Father’s Journey

My father opened my eyes to how much our daily choices matter. It wasn’t just genetics; his diet played a big role in his brain health. At the time, none of us realized how much these seemingly small choices were affecting his long-term health.

Watching him lose memories motivated me to teach others how to protect their brains with food as medicine.

How to Protect Your Brain Today

The good news is that it’s never too late to start caring for your brain. Here are a few science-backed tips from Dr. Perlmutter and other experts:

  1. Cut back on added sugars: Read labels and avoid foods with high-fructose corn syrup, sodas, candy, and sweetened processed foods.

  2. Choose whole fruits instead of juices: Whole fruit contains fiber and nutrients that slow sugar absorption.

  3. Eat more healthy fats: Foods like avocados, nuts, olive oil, and fatty fish (or plant-based omega-3s) support brain cell health.

  4. Load up on antioxidants: Vegetables, berries, and leafy greens protect the brain from oxidative stress.

  5. Move your body: Exercise improves blood flow to the brain and boosts mitochondrial health.

  6. Sleep well: Your brain cleans itself during deep sleep – don’t skip it!

Your Health is in Your Hands

I often think about how things might have been different if we had known what we know now. That’s why I share this – not to scare you, but to inspire you. Dementia is not always inevitable. Our daily food choices have the power to support or harm our brain health.

Your body and brain are miracles, but they need your help. By using food as medicine, you can protect your brain’s mitochondria, improve your energy, and keep your mind sharp as you age.

👉 Because you deserve a life filled with energy, memories, and moments that matter.
