Take a look around your kitchen for a moment.
Plastic water bottles. Food storage containers. Takeout packaging. Grocery packaging. Plastic-lined cans.
Plastic has become such a normal part of everyday life that most of us rarely stop to think about how much of it comes into contact with our food and water.
As a nutritionist, I often focus on the quality of the foods we eat—whole foods, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and clean sources of hydration. But in recent years, researchers have begun asking another important question:
What else are we consuming along with our food?
One area receiving increasing attention is our exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics.
While there is still much to learn, emerging research suggests that these tiny plastic particles may be entering our bodies more frequently than many of us realize.
What Are Microplastics?
Microplastics are extremely small plastic fragments that result from the breakdown of larger plastic products. Nanoplastics are even smaller—so small that they can potentially interact with cells and tissues throughout the body.
Researchers have identified microplastics in:
- Bottled water
- Tap water
- Seafood
- Salt
- Fruits and vegetables
- Packaged foods
- Airborne dust
In other words, exposure appears to be widespread and difficult to completely avoid.
How Do Plastics Get Into Food and Water?
Plastics can enter our food supply in several ways.
Food packaging may shed tiny particles over time. Plastic containers can release chemicals when exposed to heat, sunlight, or repeated use. Environmental plastic waste breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually finding its way into soil, waterways, and agricultural systems.
Even foods considered healthy can contain microplastics simply because they were grown, processed, transported, or packaged within a world heavily dependent on plastic materials.
What Does the Research Suggest?
Scientists are actively studying the potential health implications of microplastic exposure.
Research has found microplastics in human blood, lung tissue, placental tissue, and stool samples, demonstrating that these particles are entering and moving through the human body.
The long-term health effects are still being investigated, but researchers are exploring possible links to:
- Chronic inflammation
- Oxidative stress
- Hormonal disruption
- Immune system changes
- Cardiovascular health concerns
- Gut microbiome alterations
It is important to emphasize that many of these findings are still emerging, and scientists continue to evaluate how significant these effects may be in real-world human exposure.
As with many areas of health and nutrition, the goal is not panic—it is awareness.
Why the Gut May Be Part of the Conversation
One area that particularly interests me is the relationship between microplastics and gut health.
The digestive tract serves as one of the body's primary barriers between the outside environment and our internal systems. Researchers are investigating whether microplastics may influence the gut microbiome, intestinal permeability, and inflammatory pathways.
Since we know the gut plays a critical role in digestion, immunity, nutrient absorption, metabolism, and overall wellness, this is an area worth watching closely as more research develops.
What Can We Do?
The good news is that there are practical steps we can take to reduce our exposure.
Perfection is neither realistic nor necessary. Small improvements can add up over time.
Some strategies include:
Choose Filtered Water
A high-quality water filtration system may help reduce certain contaminants, including some microplastic particles.
Reduce Single-Use Plastics
Using reusable stainless steel or glass water bottles can help decrease exposure from disposable plastic containers.
Avoid Heating Food in Plastic
Heat can increase the migration of chemicals and particles from plastic into food. Whenever possible, use glass, ceramic, or stainless-steel containers for heating and storage.
Choose More Whole Foods
Whole foods generally require less processing and packaging than highly processed convenience foods.
Store Food in Glass Containers
Glass containers are durable, reusable, and do not leach plastic particles into food.
Be Mindful of Plastic Tea Bags
Some tea bags are made with plastic-based materials that may release microplastics when steeped in hot water. Choosing loose-leaf tea or plastic-free tea bags may be a better option.
My Perspective
When I first began studying nutrition, the conversation centered primarily on calories, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
Today, we understand that health is influenced by much more than the nutrient content of our food. Environmental exposures, sleep, stress, movement, relationships, and the quality of the products we interact with every day all contribute to our overall wellness.
The discussion surrounding plastics is still evolving, but I believe it highlights an important principle:
The closer we stay to nature, the better our bodies tend to function.
Choosing more whole foods, drinking clean water, reducing unnecessary plastic exposure, and supporting the body's natural detoxification systems through healthy lifestyle habits are practical steps that align with long-term wellness.
We may not be able to eliminate plastic from modern life, but we can make thoughtful choices that help reduce our exposure and support our health for years to come.
Small changes, practiced consistently, often create the greatest impact.
