I’ve been in the health and wellness field for over 20 years, and I can tell you this with absolute certainty: stress is one of the most dangerous health risk factors we face. It’s called the “silent killer” because it often works quietly behind the scenes, damaging our health long before we realize what’s happening.
And I know this from personal experience.
My Story: How Stress Nearly Changed My Life Forever
At 25 years old, I was on the fast track—juggling career goals, life changes, and a tremendous amount of stress. I ignored the signs that my body was trying to send me: fatigue, tension, and that constant feeling of being “wired but tired.” Then, one morning, my life changed in a way I never expected.
Within 24 hours, I became completely paralyzed.
Doctors eventually diagnosed me with acute myelitis, a rare and serious neurological condition in which a viral infection attacks the spinal cord, leading to intense inflammation along the spine. My MRIs revealed significant inflammation in my spinal cord, but fortunately, no lesions or inflammation in my brain. I was told the paralysis could be permanent.
To say I was terrified would be an understatement.
But something inside me refused to give up. Through determination, faith, and the belief that my body could heal, I walked out of the hospital three weeks later with only minor symptoms. Over time, I regained full mobility.
Looking back, I know stress played a significant role. My immune system was worn down, which allowed that virus to invade my spinal cord and cause so much inflammation. That experience became a powerful turning point for me—and it’s why I’m so passionate about teaching others how to care for their bodies through mindfulness and using food as medicine.
What Stress Does to Your Body
When we feel pressure—whether it’s from work, finances, or life circumstances—our bodies go into “fight-or-flight” mode. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline surge through the body.
In short bursts, this response helps us stay alert and focused. But when stress becomes chronic, those hormones stay elevated, causing:
High blood pressure and damage to blood vessels
Weakened immunity
Disrupted digestion and gut health
Hormonal imbalances leading to fatigue and weight gain
Sleep disturbances
Faster aging at the cellular level
Stress doesn’t just live in your mind—it leaves fingerprints on every cell in your body.
Stress Shows Up Quietly
What makes stress so dangerous is how subtle it can be. It often disguises itself as everyday issues:
Constant low energy
Digestive discomfort (bloating, constipation, diarrhea)
Frequent headaches or muscle tension
Mood swings or irritability
Cravings for sugar or processed foods
Brain fog or trouble focusing
We tend to ignore these symptoms because we think they’re “normal.” But they’re actually your body’s way of asking for help.
Mindfulness is the Key
I teach my clients that managing stress doesn’t mean eliminating it. Life will always have challenges. What matters is how we respond.
Here are a few tools that can change everything:
Pause and breathe. Try box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4). It’s simple and powerful (I wrote about this in a previous blog).
Move your body. Exercise helps release stress hormones and boosts your mood.
Nourish your body. A whole-food, plant-based diet calms inflammation and supports your immune system.
Sleep well. Quality rest helps your body repair and reset.
Set boundaries. Protect your time and energy.
Stay connected. Surround yourself with people who lift you up.
You Deserve to Thrive
If you had an underlying health condition, when would you want to know? Stress works the same way—the sooner you address it, the better.
My journey taught me that the body has an incredible ability to heal when we give it what it needs. Today, I help others create healthier lives through mindfulness and food as medicine because I know firsthand how transformative these practices can be.
Final Thought
Your health is your foundation. Without it, everything else feels harder. Take a moment right now. Pause. Breathe. Ask yourself: What small shift can I make today to create more calm in my life?
Because while stress may be the silent killer, you have the power to rewrite the story.
“It’s not stress that kills us, it’s our reaction to it.” – Dr. Hans Selye
