The Microbiome - Our Second Brain

The Microbiome - Our Second Brain

October 23, 2024

The microbiome is a community of living organisms that live in our gut. These living organisms help with digestion, destroy harmful bacteria, boost our immune system, influence mental health, and promote healthy skin. Many experts, including scientists and doctors, even refer to the microbiome as the second brain because of its function and importance in the human body.

Here are a few facts about the microbiome:

  • There are over one hundred trillion microbial cells in the gut.
  • The microbiome affects health by influencing the immune system and metabolism.
  • It helps to reduce inflammation, especially when eating foods that keep the gut flourishing.
  • If there is a disruption to these microbial cells, it can lead to chronic disease, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, IBS and more.

Put simply, without our good gut bacteria, we would not survive.

The best way to maintain gut health is to eat a diverse diet rich in complex carbohydrates, including fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, sourdough bread, and kimchi. In addition to eating the right foods, incorporate a pre-and probiotic, stay active, reduce stress, hydrate, and make sure to get enough sleep.
